Berlin

The Berlin Wall snaked through the city of Berlin like a living being. It was a stark reminder of power. Berlin remained a divided city after World War II and the wall was more than a symbol of this division. It was a concrete reminder throughout the city, separating neighbors and family. Walking along the western side of the wall witnessed a riot of color and statement. The eastern side of the wall was pristine, but sterile and dotted with armed guard towers at close distances. On the west one could sit at an outdoor table, enjoy a drink and visit with friends. On the eastern side were expanses of mined barren ground and all the buildings had barred windows.

The Wall in the west became the largest expression of graffiti art and comment in the world. It was intriguing, carefully thought out art, a bit of whimsy with a marker, or meandering expression of emotion. From broad expanses of characters and design to the smallest initials it screamed at all who walked by "I am free to express".

The Wall like life in Berlin was varied. Some humor, some tragedy, some philosophy and some stupidity. And then on the other side.......Whitewash.
